During a snowstorm in West Virginia, one police officer was ready for his opportunity.

Policeman and former American Idol Contestant, Carlton Smith, was asked to sing the National Anthem at the West Virginia vs University of Kansas basketball game. The scheduled artist, Leslie Dorchester, was delayed due to traffic and they were desperate for a singer to fill in.

Then a fellow officer recalled that Smith performed on the American Idol Show in 2014.  Smith was asked to sing the National Anthem for the energetic fans.

“Any chance I get to do the national anthem is always a big deal to me,” said Smith.  With just 5 minutes notice, he was in the national spotlight again.

The result – a moving performance, which wowed the crowd.

This is a perfect example of Les Brown’s training on preparation. Brown states, “It is better to be prepared and not have an opportunity, than have an opportunity and not be prepared.”
